The paper examines data from the legendary "BSK Study", where a dairyman has his own raw milk inoculated with pathogens. The BSK study is widely cited on the Internet and is described in the book The Untold Story of Milk. See visual displays in the paper of what happened to the farmer's milk.

The rationale for the paper

I developed this paper in response to questions from consumers about raw milk information. In July of 2009 I wrote an article on the Ethicurean about the state of information about raw milk, specifically the issue of raw milk's ability to kill pathogens.

The fact is that both regulators and raw milk advocates cite the same studies about the ability of raw milk to kill pathogens. They reach vastly different conclusions from the same data. In both instances, their conclusions are overly simplistic.

Raw milk is a complex medium and the research on its ability to kill pathogens makes that clear. For raw milk consumers interested in making an informed decision about their food consumption, we need a more thorough analysis of the literature.

The raw milk white paper available to you here takes complex information about raw milk and its ability to kill pathogens and it presents it to you in a series of visual displays -- graphs that tell you a story about raw milk.

The cost

I provide a lot of free information on the Internet because I enjoy it. Writing a systematic paper is another matter and to do so requires some sort of funding. Because of the controversial nature of raw milk, the best sponsor for this paper is you, the raw milk consumer. You are sponsoring quality information about raw milk by purchasing this paper.

"As a small farmer who consumes her own fresh (raw) milk, I find this data and Amanda Rose's analysis of it very enlightening." ~~ Diane Coe

"I found the paper well put together and very easy to read. The graphs were excellent in detailing the results of the tests."
